There’s not much information on whether disposable masks really work to control the flu. Some experts believe their biggest benefit may be that they keep other people away from you (nobody wants to sit near Mask Lady on the bus), thereby reducing your risk. The best way to prevent a flu infection: Wash your hands frequently. If you’re worried about sucking in car exhaust (especially if you’re a cyclist), the masks may help if they’re worn snugly. But keep in mind that because their filter material can get clogged quickly, they’re not designed to be used more than once.
